History

The Town of Coats, North Carolina, owes its origin to James T. Coats, who at 26 years old bought 700 acres in Harnett County and established a general store, catalyzing the town’s formation in the early 20th century. Coats is also notable for being home to North Carolina’s first licensed aviator, Alton Stewart, a World War I pilot who gained fame working with Curtiss-Wright Flying Service in Raleigh and significantly contributed to the popularity of aviation in the state. Stewart’s legacy is commemorated by a tombstone in Coats, recognizing his pioneering role in aviation, including a 1926 license signed by Orville Wright.

The Annual Coats Farmers’ Day is a fall tradition featuring a range of activities including a golf tournament, tractor and antique car shows, live music, kids’ park, assorted competitions, a pig cook-off, and even a street dance. Another fall highlight is the Coats Farmer’s Day Golf Tournament, where community members swap tractors for golf carts for a day of fun and camaraderie. Additionally, the Coats Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Annual Coats Chamber Bluegrass in the Park, a family-friendly festival offering live bluegrass music, picnic opportunities, and a chance for attendees to showcase their dance skills. 

Education
